Custom software development

Custom software development, built around how your business works

When off-the-shelf tools force your team into workarounds, we design and build software that fits the way you operate, then stay on to run and improve it.

Custom Software Development by TechKnow

Overview

Off-the-shelf tools are built for everyone. Custom software is built for the way your business actually runs.

What is custom software development?

Custom software development is designing, building and maintaining software for one organization's specific processes, instead of adapting an off-the-shelf product. You own the code, it fits how your team works, and it changes when your business does.

TechKnow is a custom software development company for businesses that have outgrown spreadsheets, stitched-together SaaS tools or an ageing in-house system. We build web applications, mobile apps, internal tools and the back-end services that connect them. That covers scheduling and billing for a medical practice, portfolio modelling for financial advisors, and bookings and delivery for a vehicle-rental business.

UK clients usually call this bespoke software development. It means the same thing: software designed for your process, not a template configured to look like it. It also means the code, the data and the cloud accounts are yours.

Who we build for

  • Operators in healthcare, financial services, travel, education and hospitality who need software that matches a regulated or unusual workflow.
  • Founders who need a product built properly the first time, by a team that has shipped its own products.
  • Agencies and consultancies that need an engineering partner behind their client work. We do this for Mark My Words Media.

Why clients choose TechKnow

We are a focused team, not a body shop. You talk to the engineers doing the work. Our US office in Minneapolis handles partnership and planning, and our in-house team in Srinagar overlaps the US and UK working day. We also build and run our own products, Pupil ERP, GuestSide, SetGo and Cablyst, so we know what it takes to keep software working after launch day.

Capabilities

What Custom Software Development includes

Web applications

Customer portals, dashboards, booking systems and admin tools that work on any device.

Mobile apps

iOS and Android apps from one React Native codebase, sharing logic with your web product.

APIs and integrations

Connect payments, CRMs, ERPs, telephony and government systems through clean, documented APIs.

Workflow automation

Replace manual steps and spreadsheet hand-offs with software that routes, checks and records the work.

Data and reporting

Pipelines into BigQuery or Postgres and dashboards your leadership team will actually open.

Support and evolution

Monitoring, security updates and a steady release cadence after launch, under a monthly retainer.

Process

How the engagement runs

1

Discovery

One to three weeks mapping users, workflows, integrations and risks. You get a scope, an architecture and an estimate you can hold us to.

2

Design

Clickable prototypes of the key screens, tested with the people who will use them before any production code is written.

3

Build in sprints

Two-week sprints with a working demo at the end of each. Your team sees progress in a staging environment, not in status reports.

4

Launch

Data migration, user training, monitoring and a planned cut-over, including a rollback plan.

5

Run and improve

We stay on for maintenance and new features, or hand over cleanly to your in-house team with documentation.

Technology

Tools we run in production

Chosen per project for your team, your hosting and your budget, not for the sake of novelty.

  • Node.js
  • NestJS
  • Fastify
  • PostgreSQL

Pricing

How pricing works

We price work in one of three ways, and we tell you which one fits before you sign anything.

  • Fixed scope, fixed price. For work we can specify up front: a discovery sprint, an MVP with a frozen feature list, a migration with a known end state. You know the total before we start.
  • Time and materials. For products that will change as you learn. You pay for the hours the team works, see them every week, and can re-prioritize at any sprint boundary.
  • Monthly dedicated team. For long-running work. A fixed monthly fee per engineer, with the same people on your product every month.

Most clients start with a short paid discovery so the estimate for the build is based on facts rather than guesses. Send us a brief and we will tell you which model we would use and why.

FAQ

Custom Software Development: common questions

1

How much does custom software development cost?

It depends on scope, integrations and how long the team works. The total is roughly team size × weeks × rate. We fix the price for well-defined work and use time and materials for products that will change. Our guide to custom software development cost walks through the drivers.

2

How long does it take to build custom software?

A focused first release usually takes 8–16 weeks after discovery. Larger platforms are delivered in stages, so something useful goes live early and the rest follows sprint by sprint.

3

Who owns the code?

You do. Code lives in your repository, infrastructure runs in your cloud accounts, and intellectual property is assigned to you in the contract.

4

Do you work with UK and European companies?

Yes. Our Srinagar team overlaps the UK working day. For EU and UK clients we work under GDPR-aligned data processing terms. See our UK page and Europe page.

5

Can you take over software another company built?

Yes. We start with a code and infrastructure audit, fix what is risky, then continue development. See legacy software modernization for larger rescues.
